What's actually hiding inside your photos
Cameras and phones write metadata into every file they save. The most common block is EXIF: capture date and time, camera make and model, lens, exposure settings, and — if location services were on — latitude and longitude precise enough to identify a building. Editing software adds more: Photoshop and Lightroom leave XMP records of the tools used, and some workflows attach IPTC records with author names and contact details.
None of this is visible in the image itself, which is exactly why it leaks. People crop faces out of photos and blur license plates, then post the original coordinates of their living room without ever knowing they did.
When you should strip metadata
Selling something second-hand and photographing it at home. Posting photos of your kids to a school group. Sharing apartment photos while advertising a sublet. Sending identity documents or screenshots to strangers. Publishing photography under a pseudonym. Reporting or whistleblowing of any kind. In each of these cases the picture is meant to be public — the place and time it was taken is not.
Large platforms like Instagram and Facebook strip most metadata on upload, but marketplaces, forums, blogs, email and most chat apps often pass files through untouched. The safe habit is simple: clean first, then share, no matter where it's going.
How this remover works — and why it's lossless
Image files are containers: the compressed pixel data sits in one set of segments, the metadata in others. This tool parses the container, deletes only the metadata segments — EXIF, XMP, IPTC, text chunks — and copies the pixel data through byte for byte. Your image is never decoded and re-compressed, so there is zero quality loss and the cleaned file is usually a little smaller than the original.
Compare that with the common quick fix of taking a screenshot of the photo or re-saving it in an editor: those do drop metadata, but they also re-encode the image, degrade quality, and often change dimensions. A structural strip is strictly better.
Check before and after
Drop a photo in and the tool first behaves like a metadata viewer: it lists the camera, timestamps, software traces and — highlighted in warning colours — any GPS position, with a map link so you can see precisely what you were about to give away. After cleaning, drop the downloaded copy back in: the list comes back empty. That before/after loop is the fastest way to trust any cleaning tool, including this one.
Private by architecture, not by promise
Most online metadata removers work by uploading your photo to their server, cleaning it there, and serving it back. That means the one file you wanted to make more private took a round trip through someone else's machine. Are my photos uploaded to a server?
Never for photos. JPG, PNG and WebP files are parsed and cleaned by JavaScript running in your own browser tab, so the photo itself never crosses the network — you can watch the DevTools Network panel while cleaning and see zero file transfers. Only non-image formats (PDF, video, audio) travel to our cleaning server, encrypted, and are deleted immediately.
Does removing metadata change the image quality?
No. The tool removes whole metadata segments from the file container and copies the compressed image data through unchanged. Pixels are never re-encoded, so quality and resolution stay identical.
Which photo formats are supported?
JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP are cleaned losslessly. HEIC (the iPhone default) isn't supported yet — export as JPEG first via Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, or share the photo to Files which converts it.
Can I clean several photos at once?
